{"id":1449,"date":"2014-03-30T21:10:32","date_gmt":"2014-03-30T21:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2014-03-31T19:58:51","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T19:58:51","slug":"what-did-you-expect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/?p=1449","title":{"rendered":"What did you expect?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c.jpg\" alt=\"6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c\" width=\"302\" height=\"303\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-995\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c.jpg 302w, http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6a00d83451cfe769e2013482e7caea970c-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOnce again over at <strong>Rachel Held Evans<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/rachelheldevans.com\/blog\/world-vision-update\">blog<\/a>, our millenial 30 something semi-liberal Evangelical Xian friends are struggling with the divisive actions of their more Conservative Xian brethren.<\/p>\n<p>The folks at World Vision, a very large and prominent Xian charity organization succumbed to conservative (and financial) pressure and caved in, reversing a decision to &#8220;<em>allow<\/em>&#8221; gay couples to work for them&#8230; isn&#8217;t that just special?<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/worldvisionint.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/worldvisionint.jpg\" alt=\"worldvisionint\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1443\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nRachel and her many readers (she had over 600 comments posted within a day of posting, wow) are incredibly dismayed and disappointed once again.<br \/>\nIn Rachel&#8217;s own words: <em>&#8220;This whole situation has left me feeling frustrated, heartbroken, and lost. I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever been more angry at the Church, particularly the evangelical culture in which I was raised and with which I for so long identified.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nAdmiring Rachel and her efforts to modify extreme Xiansanity\u2122 from within from a distance for some time now, I&#8217;m moved by her and her reader\u2019s empathy and understanding for gay and lesbians.<\/p>\n<p>But another part of me wants to shake them all by the shoulders&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>What the fuck did you expect? IT\u2019S IN YOUR BOOK<\/em>!&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/godsword.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/godsword.jpg\" alt=\"godsword\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-637\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The World Vision folks are just trying to be logical, consistent, dedicated, righteous Xians too! They are trying to interpret their sacred book&#8217;s verses and &#8220;<em>live their lives in Christ<\/em>&#8221; (gag me) just like Rachel and her sympathizers are struggling to do.<br \/>\nAlso from Rachel in a previous post: <em>&#8220;And it puts into stark, unsettling relief just how out-of-control the evangelical obsession with homosexuality has become&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8220;The gospel is at stake only insofar as we make one\u2019s position on same-sex marriage a part of it. The gospel is threatened, not by gay people getting married, but by Christians saying support or opposition to gay marriage is an essential part of the gospel when it\u2019s not<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s not how the only slightly more Conservative Evangelicals read it.<br \/>\n<strong>It IS in the gospel, it is in the book, both the Old and New Testament respectively: Gays are an abomination and that abominable behavior deserves death.<\/strong><br \/>\nFull stop, no interpretation necessary&#8230;&#8221;<em>THAT&#8217;S WHAT IT SAYS!!!!<\/em>&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Bible.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Bible.png\" alt=\"Bible\" width=\"260\" height=\"299\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-579\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And being Christ-like to the more Conservative folks cannot include jettisoning those verses from their unquestionably inerrant or at least inspired text. Being Christ-like to them is \u201c<em>loving the sinner, hating the sin<\/em>.\u201d Being kind to gays by not stoning them on the edge of town and trying to dissuade them from their abominable lifestyle &#8220;<em>choice<\/em>&#8221; and thereby saving their souls from eternal damnation, <em>and not accepting that gays should marry<\/em> is a righteous, noble cause; one which Christ himself would definitely approve.<br \/>\nTo those uber-Conservatives, Rachel and her readers are misguided (mostly young) liberal Xians too much influenced by our modern, overly liberal, secular culture to see this obvious &#8220;<em>truth<\/em>.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd while the two factions are both praying for the other one to receive correct guidance from Jesus to open their hearts and change their minds and make the right decision, us secularists are off to one side trying desperately not to be too offensive and blurt out:<br \/>\n&#8220;<em>THROW THE FUCKING BOOK AWAY<\/em>!&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/garbagecan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/garbagecan.jpg\" alt=\"garbagecan\" width=\"368\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1455\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/garbagecan.jpg 368w, http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/garbagecan-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s the Scripture that&#8217;s the problem.<\/p>\n<p>It is the wholly unfounded, hopelessly destructive idea that there is anything that can be a Scripture at all: a revelation from some god that says how ALL must behave. The minute you buy into that idea you&#8217;re asking for exactly what is happening.<br \/>\nWhen people think they know what god is thinking, <em>and we ALL must obey it<\/em>, this is how people behave.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/scripturescroll.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/scripturescroll.jpg\" alt=\"scripturescroll\" width=\"480\" height=\"305\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1453\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/scripturescroll.jpg 480w, http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/scripturescroll-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFrom enabling assholes like <strong>Fred Phelps<\/strong> and <strong>Mark Driscoll<\/strong>, the laughable clowns like <strong>Pat Robertson<\/strong> and <strong>Jerry Falwell<\/strong>, the clueless, sleazy <strong>Bachmann<\/strong>, <strong>Palin<\/strong>, <strong>Santorum<\/strong> and their many Republican colleagues, to enabling &#8220;<em>love the sinner, hate the sin<\/em>&#8221; and any and every possible interpretation of St. Paul and the OT &#8220;<em>clobber passages<\/em>&#8221; that condemn homosexuality: believing you have &#8220;<em>the Word of God<\/em>&#8221; makes for all this misery, MOST of the misery left in the world.  <\/p>\n<p>As an outsider, I can see how each side arrives at their conclusion. Though I am sympathetic to neither, their reasoning is based on the same delusion and there is no way for them to ever know who is right.<br \/>\nIt is the whole idea of &#8220;<em>Scripture<\/em>&#8221; that&#8217;s the problem: That there is writing that is the revealed word of some god.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s the problem.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s the delusion we must outgrow.<\/p>\n<p>Once you buy into the idea of an inspired book, <em>that we must live by<\/em>, you&#8217;re fucked.<br \/>\nAll this hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth (it was there, I had to take it) is inevitable once you accept that unprovable and absurd premise.<br \/>\nIt doesn&#8217;t merely allow people to judge others and demand how they behave, it sanctions it, it demands it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/veiledwomen.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/veiledwomen.jpg\" alt=\"veiledwomen\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1456\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe Muslim imams who keep millions of women in cultural chains all over the world feel every bit as justified in the righteousness of their behavior as Rachel and her blog followers do in accepting gays despite their scripture, no less than the Conservatives at World Vison (and the &#8220;<em>Salvation<\/em>&#8221; Army) that feel <strong>they<\/strong> got it right and are obviously acting according to god&#8217;s will by excluding gay couples.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/gaysnotallowed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/gaysnotallowed.jpg\" alt=\"gaysnotallowed\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1458\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis insanity will never end until the delusion of Scripture, the claim of revelation, is dropped from the repertoire of human behavior.<br \/>\nJust like slavery.
