{"id":1756,"date":"2014-06-01T22:09:23","date_gmt":"2014-06-01T22:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/?p=1756"},"modified":"2014-06-12T23:01:25","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T23:01:25","slug":"on-consciousness-raising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/?p=1756","title":{"rendered":"On Consciousness Raising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/samesexmarriagemale.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/samesexmarriagemale.jpg\" alt=\"samesexmarriagemale\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1757\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/samesexmarriagefemale.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wearedone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/samesexmarriagefemale.jpg\" alt=\"samesexmarriagefemale\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1758\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUSA TODAY published an OpEd 5\/30\/14 in their weekend edition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2014\/05\/29\/modern-family-supreme-court-gay-marriage-column\/9732813\/ \">&#8220;<em>Modern Family in High Court<\/em>,&#8221;<\/a> concerning the effect of images, video and grass-roots activism as a significant mediator of social change, as exemplified in the recent dramatic turnaround in US courts and public acceptance of gay and lesbian marriage; marriage equality.<br \/>\n<strong>Michael Dorf<\/strong> a law professor at Cornell discusses the impact of media: TV, movies, photo images, etc., on social change on such topics as inter-racial marriage, the abuses at Abu Ghraib, and most recently marriage equality. He points out arguments come into play as well citing &#8220;<em>the vitriol of the homophobic right, which opposed same-sex marriage, thus energizing the movement for the very institution it feared<\/em>.&#8221;<br \/>\nRead that &#8220;<em>homophobic <strong>religious<\/strong> right<\/em>&#8221; as I&#8217;m not aware of any secular groups opposed to marriage equality or who preach &#8220;<em>love the sinner, hate the sin<\/em>&#8221; or some such nonsense. Haven&#8217;t seen anyone carrying multicolored signs proclaiming:<br \/>\n&#8220;<em>Reason Hates Fags<\/em>&#8221; recently either.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a good bet it is predominantly if not solely Conservative Xiansanity\u2122 that&#8217;s to blame for any homophobia and same-sex marriage opposition we have in the US.<br \/>\nRecent polls show the majority of Americans do not oppose marriage equality, evidently not buying into the various Biblical based, illogical (isn&#8217;t that redundant?) arguments offered by Xiansanity\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>Just 3 pages before this OpEd another article in USA TODAY&#8217;s Nation section discussed the recent tidal wave of victories at the state level legalizing same-sex marriage: &#8220;<em>Victories propel gay marriage<\/em>&#8220;.
