USA TODAY on Jan 8th, a day after the attacks in Paris by Muslims on the Charlie Hedbo staff published the following commentary on their Opinion page which you can read here: Attack in Paris.
It chronicled Charlie Hedbo’s satirical efforts against Islam over the past decade, and defended the right of free speech. The piece continues:
“Muslim extremists reject this concept of free expression. They say that nothing is more important than revering its founder and protecting him from insults and that Western societies must bend to Allah’s dictates.”
In keeping with their editorial policy they simultaneously published an Opposing view: People know the consequences”, penned by a London Muslim cleric, Anjem Choudary. He begins:
“Contrary to popular misconception, Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone. Therefore, Muslims do not believe in the concept of freedom of expression, as their speech and actions are determined by divine revelation and not based in people’s desires”
That says it all. Despite the pleadings of Muslim apologists and Hollywood celebrities, Choudary clearly states what Islam is all about, not peace, but submission to divine revelation. USA TODAY at the bottom of the piece describes him as “a radical Muslim cleric”
I couldn’t disagree more. He is being one hundred percent up front about what Islam demands of its adherents. He is not promoting some extreme interpretation but the mainstream and most important fundamental aspect of his religion: Submission to the will of Allah, as revealed in the dictations of the Prophet Mohammed in the Koran and hadith. Plain and simple.
Most Muslims are just regular folks who will submit solely through their daily prayers, eating habits, worship and other prescribed behaviors and will never be compelled to kill infidels or revenge insults of their Prophet by murder. But their religion could not be more clear about submission and violence and unbelievers holding ideas contrary to Islam.
One commenter responding to one of the early Yahoo News reports of the attack calling themselves “Common Sense” made this observation: “let us have a closer look at what the Koran says about the infidels:”
Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them(2:191)
Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood (9:123)
When opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them (9:5)
Kill the Jews and the Christians if they do not convert to Islam or refuse to pay Jizya tax (9:29)
Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable (3:85)
The Jews and the Christians are perverts; fight them (9:30)
Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticise Islam. (5:33)
The infidels are unclean; do not let them into a mosque (9:28)
Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies
(22:19)
Do not hanker for peace with the infidels; behead them when you catch them (47:4)
The unbelievers are stupid; urge the Muslims to fight them (8:65)
Muslims must not take the infidels as friends (3:28)
Terrorise and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an (8:12)
Muslims must muster all weapons to terrorise the infidels (8:60)
It should not a be a surprise to anyone in the world anymore that while most Muslims will not be compelled to do violence by their religion, many will and do all over the world, merely following its dictates: Boko Haram in Africa, the Taliban in Afghanistan, IS in Syria and Iraq…the list goes on and on.
When people believe as the cleric Anjem Choudary clearly states that they have direct, unquestionable revelation from some god, this is how they behave. It is the fundamental flaw of all religions. When manifested in the particularly violent form of Islamic writings as listed above from the Koran we see the extent to what human delusions can do.
